What is Transformational Coaching?
Before I had my first coach, I didn’t really have a clue what coaching was. I had heard people saying coaching changed their life but I didn’t understand how. There’s a lot a different areas of coaching, and the industry has exploded over the past few years - for very good reason.
Coaching, in very simple terms, is helping people get from where they are now to where they want to be in their life. It provides accountability, support, guidance and perspective. We all have blind spots when it comes to our own lives, even if we don’t want to admit it.
People have started to realise, especially over the last couple of years, that life is too short to stay stuck. To stay in a job that you don’t really like but stay in because it pays the bills. To stay in a place because it’s comfortable, even though you find it suffocating. To stay in a relationship out of fear rather than love. To say no to things your heart and soul long for because it means stepping out of your comfort zone and into the unknown.
There’s a quote floating round the coaching space at the moment - everyone talks about the cost of a book, or a course, or a coach, but no one talks about the cost of staying in the same place a year from now. And it hits the nail on the head. If you’re committed and truly want change in your life, hiring a coach kicks you into sixth gear. You’re committing to change. Emotionally, financially, mentally and spiritually. You put an end to your own self sabotage and start making moves.
There’s no doubt that investing in coaching is scary. I was terrified paying for my first coach.
But I asked myself the following questions:
What will happen if I DON’T quit the job?
What will happen if I DON’T start the business?
What will happen if I DON’T book the flight?
The fear of staying in the same place in five years became scarier than quitting the job.
However, I’m not saying it won’t be overwhelming. Committing to self development is just that - a commitment. It will bring up things that you’ve buried deep. It will shine a light on the things that you may want to keep in the dark. But these things are your key to freedom. The key to the life you can’t stop thinking about. The key to the life you sit and daydream about at your desk. The key to the life you spend hours researching but take no action on because the fear gets too big.
Coaches don’t change your life, they help you change your own life.
